Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

Peter Maughan's papers contain mostly personal items. Maughan's declaration of intention to become a United States citizen is the first item in the collection. Other items in the collection include a Certificate of appointment as a Notary Public of Tooele County, Maughan's Commission as Captain of Battalion of Infantry of Tooele Military District and Certificates of election to the House of Representatives and as Probate Judge of Cache County, Utah. Maughan's correspondence with Brigham Young and other LDS Church authorities is also included. Maughan's wife, Mary Ann Weston Maughan, has her correspondence and other personal items contained in this collection. The rest of the collection consists of invitations to various events attended by the Maughans and miscellaneous items.

The materials in this collection are useful to anyone interested in early Utah History or early history of the LDS Church. Persons interested in the life of Peter Maughan will also find this collection very useful. This collection contains materials dating from 1838-1901.

This collection has been arranged by topics. The certificates of election are first, then Maughan's and his wife's correspondence, then the invitation and lastly the miscellaneous items.
