Richards Sign, 1971-1972
Scope and Contents
The Lundstrom collection has been divided into four series plus a ledger collection that consists of various account books as well as daybooks describing the company's financial dealings. Although some of the individual record sets have gaps in them, the overall collection has material from the entire period of the company's existence.
The first series in the collection consists of general financial records. Initially most of the business transactions... were kept in a single general ledger. As the company grew, so did the volume and the types of financial records. This series includes six boxes containing various financial data, initial agreements and capitalization, as well as ledgers and sales journals.
The second series in the collection consists of sixty boxes of purchase and freight invoices generated by the company. The invoice ledgers begin in 1902, and consist of large folios with the invoices attached to each page. These invoices tell what items were being sold in Logan for a given time period. These folios start in 1902 and end in 1953. There are no folios for the years 1919 through 1941. The only invoice records during this time period were from 1920 and 1921 and were not in folios. However, the company fluctuated in its filing methods. Some years the invoices, receipts, and claims were organized in a topical manner while in others, the company merely listed documents alphabetically. The register reflects this change.
The third series contain customer records. Included here are sales receipts from 1908to 1966, charge and note account ledgers from 1929 to 1980s, and customer claims against the company.
Series IV in the collection contains miscellaneous items. Included here are small amounts of correspondence from 1913 through 1928, check registers covering the period 1915 through 1974, income tax records from 1919 through 1949, and one box of miscellaneous ledgers. Lundstrom's myriad business ventures are described through various deeds and title abstracts.
Several items have been removed from the collection and placed elsewhere in the department. This material all pertained to A. G. Lundstrom's business, personal, and political life outside of the furniture company. These items include a collection of documents relating to the Logan Island Defense Committee records (MSS 141) and the Logan 7th Ward Treasurers record book collection (MSS 162).
