Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The U.S.G.S. Survey Negatives consist of 89 images from the states of California, Nevada, Utah, and Washington D.C. Included are images of Rhyolite, Nevada, Mount Shasta in California, and mule teams in Nevada. Also included are images of the Native American ceremony depicts the White Deer Skin Dance of the Hoopa Indians. The records of this special ceremony are scarce, though it is known that the skin of white deer was thought to be very valuable and served as a protective object for the owner and their family. The deer skin was often handed down from generation to generation as an heirloom.
