Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

This collection contains files and documents relating to the research of Susan Sunada that supplement her intial donation (COLL MSS 59). Many of these files relate to her work that she did for the Deseret News or her extensive research about Japanese American immigrants to America. This collection is split up into five sections that roughly mirror the organization of her earlier collection (COLL MSS 59).

The first section, titled “Places,” is organized alphabetically and contains research files and other documents related to specific places. A particularly prominent part of this section is Sunada’ research about Japanese Americans in the American West, especially those in Ogden, Utah, and Rock Springs and Kemmerer, Wyoming. These materials consist largely of notes about events in local newspapers from the late 1800s to the 1940s and lists of graves and headstones in cemeteries. Many of the newspaper article excerpts are about various accidents, disasters, and murders that befell Japanese immigrants.

The next section, called “People,” focuses on files about specific people. Some of these files focus on the genealogy and history of specific families and people, including Japanese-Americans in the West.

The “General” section contains many photographs and notes from Sunada’s work with Deseret News as well as other research and has a wide assortment of topics. Again, there are many articles about Japanese immigrants and history of the American West. Many of the folders within this section contain photographs taken by Sunada during her career at the Deseret News.

The final two sections consist of newspaper material Sunada either collected or wrote. “Deseret News” comes from a series of binders where Sunada collected news clips of articles she had written for the Deseret News. The final section called “Japanese American Newspapers” contains samples from three newspapers published by and for Japanese Americans.
