Biographical Note
The Mormon Battalion was a unit of the United States Army, organized from July 1846-July 1847 during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). At the request of U.S. President James K. Polk, the battalion enlisted more than 500 men, accompanied by 35 women and 42 children, who marched nearly 2,000 miles from Council Bluffs, Iowa Territory to California. The Battalion was instrumental in the colonization and settlement of many parts of what was to become Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah and it demonstrated Mormons’ loyalty to the American government despite having recently fled persecutions in the city of Nauvoo, Illinois and having been denied a redress of their grievances.
Formerly titled the Mormon Battalion, Inc., the Mormon Battalion Association was instituted by LDS Church President David O. McKay in 1954. It was reinstituted as a nonprofit service organization and renamed in 2006. The group seeks to keep alive the memory and stories of the men and women of the original Mormon Battalion who served from 1846-1847 and it engages in service and outreach in its communities.
