Scope and Contents

This collection contains the bylaws, minutes, member lists, correspondences, events, advertisements, newspaper clippings, pictures, and handouts concerning the Cache Valley Home & Garden Club. This group existed from September 1979 until it was disbanded in July 2001. There are three different sets of bylaws in the collection. These are from the years 1979, 1988, and 1989. The events, members, and officers were listed in the club booklet, which was printed every year. The minutes of the meetings are both handwritten and typed. There is a book of minutes that spans from September 1979-December 1985, in addition to sets of minutes for those same years that are filed separately. Included with some of the minutes are the roll sheets of those attending on different dates. The correspondence includes letters to club members from presidents, letters to the club from Utah Associated Garden Clubs, Inc. (UAGC), and thank you notes to the club. The newspaper clippings in the collection are advertisements for club events, articles featuring people who are members of the club, anniversaries, and obituaries of club members. The pictures are of the different members at events, as well as pictures of member's gardens. In the later years of the club, handouts were included from the different speakers.

Historical Note

The Cache Valley Home & Garden Club was created in September 1979 by Lerene Berry, chairman of the Logan Beautification Committee. The purpose of the group was to promote an interest in gardening and floral arts, to encourage civic beautification, and to cooperate in the conservation of native plants, wildlife, and the entire environment. The club was a part of the Utah Associated Garden Club, Inc. (UAGC). Officers were elected on a yearly basis. From 1979-1988 the club meetings were scheduled January-December. From 1989-2001, the club switched their schedule to a June-May fiscal year. Dues were originally $3.00 per person, and $5.00 per couple. This later changed to $5.00 a person. Part of the dues collected each year were sent to UAGC.

The club met once a month to do activities that were nature-based. They held a summer potluck, Christmas party, and generally two garden/landscape/home tours every year. There were also occasional trips to plant-themed places (Utah Arboretum, USU Garden walks, etc.). Guest speakers or members would discuss plants, fertilizer, pesticides, animals, and other nature topics. They also held a special event for Arbor Day (the last Friday in April). The club disbanded in July 2001 due to declining membership the difficulty recruiting new officers. The money that the club had at the time was donated to a local library for books.
