Scope and Contents

This collection documents the research and activities of Barrie Gilbert, a wildlife and fisheries professor at Utah State University from 1976 until retiring in 2008. The bulk of the materials represent his professional research and publications, and information he collected in his years of service. Of note are the field books and journals that detail daily research observations, and 16mm films documenting animal behavior, including dolphins, bears, antelope, and racoons, among others.

Biographical / Historical

Barrie Gilbert began his career at Utah State University as a wildlife biologist in 1976 after having earned his BS degree from Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada (1962), and his MA and PhD from Duke University (1964 and 1969, respectively). Gilbert primarily focused his research on animal behavior, particularly Grizzly bears. He is an acknowledged expert on bear behavior, as well a tireless advocate for the species, despite nearly losing his life to a bear attack in Yellowstone in 1977. Gilbert retired from USU in 2008 and relocated to Canada, where he holds dual citizenship.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

These materials were donated by Dr. Gilbert around the time of his retirement in 2008. Additional items (primarily audio-visual materials) were added to the collection in 2023.
