Historical Note
In 1958, the Laboratory School Administrators Association (LSAA) was founded and sought to oversee the growth and promotion of lab schools across the nation. The first president of LSAA was Avard A. Rigby, of Brigham Young University. In its early years, LSAA faced challenges due to a lack of funding and a small staff. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, discussions were held on how to improve the organization. In 1971, LSAA changed its name to the National Association of Laboratory Schools (NALS). By 1974, new bylaws were in place, the organizational structure was revamped, and the title of NALS was officially adopted. In 2011 the name was again changed to the International Association of Laboratory Schools to reflect its global scope. However, the organization has decided to preserve the name NALS on documents generated under that name. Currently, IALS has 100 laboratory school members, and sponsors an annual national conference.

Abstract
This collection contains the papers of the International Association of Laboratory Schools, formerly the National Association of Laboratory Schools and the Laboratory School Administrators Association.

Organized into two series: Ifirst, IALS/NALS materials, and second, individual lab school materials and publications.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
In May of 2004, Utah State University was designated at the repository for the IALS papers that were formerly housed at Bridgewater State College, Massachusetts. This decision was, in part, due to the presence of the Edith Bowen Laboratory School at Utah State University. Additional materials were donated in 2023 by Mary Jane Taylor.
