Utah American Revolution Bicentennial Commission papers
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of the papers of Monsignor Jerome Stoffel and of Dr. Milton C. Abrams when both were members of the Utah American Revolution Bicentennial Commission. Stoffel was appointed to serve as a regional representative on the Commission by Governor Calvin Rampton in 1973. Stoffel asked Abrams to co-chair the Bear River region (Box Elder, Cache, and Rich Counties) with him.
Stoffel, in addition to being a commissioner, was involved with the Dominguez- Escalante Bicentennial projects and the Catholic Church's Bicentennial efforts in Utah. The collection includes papers dealing with each of these areas of his involvement.
The collection's original filing order has been preserved. This order maintains a separation of the Stoffel papers from the Abrams material, leaving these two sections to be the major dividing point in the collection. The Stoffel material makes up about two-thirds of the collection. Stoffel's position required that he be present at monthly commission meetings, therefore, the major portion of his papers concerns the business minutes of the commission.
In addition, Stoffel was a member of the heritage committee. This committee had the responsibility of evaluating local project proposals and recommending them for funding. Stoffel's files contained several series of these projects that appear to have been filed to correspond with when they were presented for approval. The minutes for the Heritage Committee meetings were originally filed with the UARB business files and have been left there. The remainder of the Stoffel papers consist of two files concerning both the Dominguez-Escalante and Catholic Church Bicentennial projects. The remaining third of the collection are the records of Milt Abrams. These papers were kept by Abrams while he was chairman for the Bear River Region.
The files are mostly correspondence concerning the business of the region. The Abrams files also contain Heritage nominations for the Bear River District.
