Scope and Contents
The bulk of this collection represents the research and lecture material compiled by David Rich Lewis on the history of the United States, predominantly regarding the western US and Native American topics. In addition to copies of newspaper and journal articles, Dr. Lewis collected cartoon panels relating to his areas of focus. Files include materials detailing his service on various USU committees, personal and professional correspondence regarding publications authored by Dr. Lewis, book reviews by other published authors, and materials relating to his mentor and colleague, Allan Bogue.
This collection was previously listed as UUS_14.6/5-1:26a. It was reprocessed in 2023 to remove student materials that are protected by FERPA and to include additional materials not listed in the original finding aid, which was created in 2019 by Robert Parson.

Biographical / Historical
Professor David Rich Lewis taught in USU’s History Department from 1988 until retiring in 2017. Dr. Lewis earned his undergraduate degree from USU in 1979 before relocating to Canada to earn a master’s degree at the University of Toronto in Medieval European History. He earned a second master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1983 and remained at Madison to complete his PhD in American History with an emphasis on Native American environmental issues in 1988.
Lewis’s teaching ranged from undergraduate survey courses to graduate seminars. Lewis served on and chaired more than 90 student thesis committees during his USU career.
A widely published scholar of the American West, Lewis also devoted part of his time to editing the Western Historical Quarterly, first as assistant, then associate, co-editor, and, finally, editor from 2003 to 2017, the last year of the Quarterly’s publication on campus.

Dr. Lewis deposited his papers with University Archives at the time of his retirement in 2017.
