Scope and Contents

The A. Douglas Allen Photo Collection consists of 126 black and white prints taken between 1930 and 1950. Included in the collection are snapshots of Allen's military training at Ft. Douglas in Salt Lake City, Utah; a Utah Agricultural College (now called Utah State University) sponsored engineering field trip to Washington, Oregon and California; various locations throughout Cache Valley including the Logan LDS Temple and USU campus; road projects; and the Deer Creek Dam construction in Utah County. Also included in the collection are personal documents consisting of a detailed work history, a resume, and an obituary.

Biographical Note

A. Douglas Allen (1914-2006) was born in Hyrum, Utah on March 26, 1914 to Austin David and Georgia Obray Allen. He attended public school in Cache Valley and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from Utah State Agricultural College in 1938. He went on to work for the Utah State Road Commission, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Geneva Steel Company, and Thiokol Chemical Company. He was also a successful dry-land and poultry farmer. He married Ruth Emma Hanks on June 23, 1939 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various church positions during his membership including bishop, temple worker, and Patriarch. Allen was also involved in city government by serving on the Hyrum City Council.
