The Reverend Paul Jones Photographs 1913 Collection

 Collection
Identifier: UUS_P0564

Scope and Contents

Collection contains 79 images of various Utah locations, including Logan, Bear Lake and environs, Magna, Curlew, and Garfield. Also pictured are various buildings including St. John’s Episcopal Church and Rectory, All Saints Mission in Garfield, and Logan Temple. Also includes numerous photos of Boy Scouts engaged in activities: camping, hiking, fishing, fording, and swimming. Photos are very likely of Logan Troop 1 on their initial 12-day, 100-mile hike to Bear Lake in August 1913. A few photos of a wedding are very likely those of Reverend Paul Jones, the Scoutmaster of Troop 1 and pastor of St. John’s Episcopal Church from 1906 until 1914, who married Mary Elizabeth Ralch in June of 1913. No persons are undeniably identifiable, although contemporary newspaper accounts give some idea about who is in the photos. Copies of these newspaper clips have been included in the relevant folder for additional reference.

Biographical Note

The 1906 arrival in Logan, Utah of the Rev. Paul Jones and the Rev. Donald Johnston launched an era of high profile Episcopal ministry in Logan, Utah—a predominantly Mormon community. The two young priests were active proponents of the Social Gospel movement as well as Progressive Era reforms. Their vigorous public outreach, particularly with students at the Agricultural College of Utah, included establishing Logan's first lending library, installing the first tennis court and indoor shower, as well as publishing a journal called The Portal, which contained articles on a variety of literary, theological, community, and social reform issues. Johnston departed for Pennsylvania in 1911, and in 1913 Jones moved to Salt Lake City where he subsequently served as the Episcopal Bishop of Utah until being forced to resign in 1917 for his pacifist views during World War I. Rev. Jones also served as the first scoutmaster of the first Boy Scout group in the west, Scout Troop 1.
