Scope and Contents

The 269 photographs and negatives in this collection are divided into thirteen folders organized into three categories: recreational trips, Beat Movement paintings, and Photos of Beat Artists and Authors. The Ernesto Edwards Photograph Collection contains a variety of items displaying important elements of the Beat movement. The images provide insights into the California Bay area's artistic vitality during the Beat movement.

Biographical Note

Ernesto Edwards was born in Salt Lake City UT, in 1933. After graduating from the University of Utah in 1962, he visited California and came in contact with the Beat movement and poets Lewis Ellingham and Gail Chugg. After deciding to move to the Bay area, Edwards developed an interest in collage. Edwards made collage works throughout the 1960s while also writing poetry. The majority of Edwards’ paintings feature human beings and animals.

Abstract

The Ernesto Edwards photograph collection consists of 269 photographs and negatives mostly originating from the 1960s and 1970s. Photographs from this collection document recreational trips to Utah, Yosemite National Park, and to the California Bay area. Other images display Beat art paintings and popular figures such as painters Nemi Frost, Tom Field and Russel Fitzgerald, poets Marylin Hackerm, Tom McNeil, Lewis Ellingham, Robert Creeley, Allen Ginsberg, and Joanne Kyger. The collection also includes artistic images taken by Joe Ketola which focus on human nature and excesses.
