Carroll H. Wegemann photograph collection
Scope and Contents
This collection contains a field journal, eight hundred ninety-one printed photographs. twelve portrait cards, twenty-one postcars, and five hundred sixteen nitrate negatives, as well as other manuscript materials that chronicle the career of geologist Carroll H. Wegeman. Due to the nature of the collection and how it was received, it does not reflect orginal order. Nitrate negatives have been moved to cold storage and can be found in cold storage boxes 76-80. Additionally, within this collection is a “mini-collection” of photographs taken by William Henry Jackson (1843-1942). Jackson was a photographer, painter, and a Civil War veteran. Taken in 1937, this “mini-collection” includes a portrait of Jackson and images of the Grand Teton Mountains. His art and photographs can be found in archives and museums throughout the country. Some of his work has been digitized and can be found and viewed on the J. Paul Getty Museum website (see http://www.getty.edu/art/collection/artists/1853/william-henry-jackson-american-1843-1942/).

Biographical Note
Carroll H. Wegemann was born to August Henry Wegemann and Susannah Isabella Harvey on 26 March 1879 in Wisconsin. He married Louise Presbury Cook on 8 April 1911. They had one daughter, Isabel, born 3 December 1912. Wegemman passed away in 1952. Wegemann graduated from the University of Wisconsin earning a degree in anatomy. He then studied geology as a graduate student for two years before being hired by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as a geologist in 1907. He eventually worked for the National Park Service. While working for the USGS he made important scientific discoveries and contributed to geological sciences by authoring various papers, pamphlets, and other types of publications. His career as a regional and petroleum geologist gave him opportunities to travel domestically and internationally. He participated extensive geological studies in Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and the greater Intermountain West. Internationally, he went to Cuba, Mexico, and Nicaragua. As reflected in the collection, Wegemann researched his genealogy with particular interest in his German heritage.
