Biographical / Historical
While teaching at the Oregon School for the Deaf (1957-1966), Thomas Clark witnessed a two-year-old child being placed in the school’s residential program. This traumatic event had a profound impact on Clark and fueled his determination to find a way to provide services to these children and their families in their own homes. Less than ten years later, Clark established the SKI*HI Institute, and began a path of outreach and demonstration to teach families of young children with special needs how to communicate with their child, how to obtain the services they need in their local community, and how to get the vital early start they need to succeed in life. As a result of Dr. Clark’s pioneering efforts in early intervention, the SKI*HI Institute continues as a national and international leader in early intervention. Over 100,000 infants, children, and their families have been impacted by the materials and training developed and provided by the SKI*HI Institute. Dr. Clark earned a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University (1956), a master’s degree from Gallaudet University (1957), and a PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1979). He retired from Utah State University in 1992 and passed away in 2010.
