Scope and Contents

The following collection consists of unpublished manuscript and poems by R. A. Bacon that speak of his work on the cattle range as a cow punch and other areas of the cattle business in the early twentieth century. One manuscript is an autobiographical novel (Pecos of 79's) and the other (The Cowboy From the North) depicts ranching in Northern Arizona around the turn of the twentieth century. Also contains other biographical material and photographs of Bacon.

Biographical Note

Robert Austin "Pecos" Bacon was born on June 24, 1878 in Greenville, Texas to Joel and Elizabeth Bacon. Joel died when Robert was seven years old and Elizabeth died shortly thereafter. Young Robert supported himself working on nearby cattle ranches. On April 19, 1908 Robert married Stella Lee Buffington at Marlow, Oklahoma where he became a father to step-son Fred Buffington and later fathered two biological children, a son Robert H. Bacon and a daughter Mozelle Bacon Dierking. R.A. Bacon died at the age of 60 on September 7, 1938 in Sioux City, Iowa.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The materials in this collection were purchased in conjunction with the Newel Hart papers in 1984 by USU Special Collections & Archives for inclusion in the Marie Eccles-Caine Archive of Intermountain Americana.
