The Doran Baker papers is an extensive collection of publications, photographs, papers, correspondence, tapes, discs, and research accrued by Dr. Doran Baker from 1956 to 2020. The contents of this collection are related to Dr. Baker's work as a professor of Electrical Engineering at Utah State University, Co-Director of the Rocky Mountain NASA Space Grant Consortium, Co-Founder of the Electro-Dynamics Lab, and Founder of the Space Dynamics Lab. This collection also includes various publications related to Doran Baker’s research on the history of Cache Valley.

Biographical / Historical

Doran Baker was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1931. He earned a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Utah and worked for the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory in Massachusetts before becoming a professor of Electrical Engineering at Utah State University in 1959. Early in his career he helped found the Electro-Dynamics Laboratory, which he later merged with the University of Utah’s Upper Air Research Laboratory to create the Space Dynamics Laboratory. In addition to this, he was Co-Director of the Rocky Mountain NASA Space Grant Consortium and founding editor of the Rocky Mountain Space Grant Symposium Proceedings. He remained dedicated to teaching and mentoring throughout his career, and retired as a professor of Electrical Engineering at USU in 2021 after 62 years of service. Outside of his professional work, he enjoyed researching the history of Cache Valley and wrote multiple publications on this subject. Mr. Baker passed away in 2022 at the age of 90.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Materials were collected from Doran Baker's office on USU campus, filing cabinets in the basement of the engineering building, and two off-site storage units.
