Nathaniel Vary Jones, Jr. diary
Scope and Contents
The Nathaniel Vary Jones, Jr. diary covers the period from November 1887 to December 1894, including his imprisonment and his travels to Colonia Juarez for his marriage to Barbara. He also recounts the February 1891 court proceedings in which he pled guilty to the charge of Unlawful Cohabitation with Janet and Elizabeth. “The hardest part of the matter was that I had to promise to obey the law in reference to polygamy,” Jones lamented, having married Barbara just months earlier.

Biographical Note
Nathaniel Vary Jones, Jr. was born to Rebecca M. Burton and Nathaniel Vary Jones, Sr. in Salt Lake City, Utah on November 9, 1850. Baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on September 30, 1860, he served in the Eastern States Mission from October 1876 to May 1877. Jones also served in a number of leadership positions in the church, including as a high priest, member of the Quorums of the Seventy, counselor in the bishopric of the 15th ward, counselor in the presidency of the high priests quorum of the Salt Lake stake, and president of the high priests quorum of the Granite stake. Jones’ marriage to Janet Innes Swan on December 24, 1872, resulted in five children: Agnes, Julia, Janet, Isabel, and Nathala. He took a second wife on February 4, 1885, Elizabeth Dwight Barlow, with whom he had four children: Lillian, Clara, Calvin, and Aaron. As a result of this union, he served time in the Utah Penitentiary and was later charged with Unlawful Cohabitation. After Janet passed away on July 7, 1889, Nathaniel travelled to Colonia Juarez, Mexico, to marry Barbara Elizabeth Morris on June 7, 1890. A lawyer by trade, Jones was the collector and deputy sheriff of Salt Lake County from 1875 to 1886. Jones passed away on April 18, 1921 at the age of 70.
