Parkinson Family letters

 Collection
Identifier: UUS_COLL MSS 521

Scope and Contents

The collection is made up of letters sent to “Carrie” Parkinson dating from January 2, 1890 until January 17, 1891. These letters are being sent from “Carrie’s” mother, father, and sister, while “Carrie” is in “Rock Creek”. This is most likely Rock Creek, Missouri, just outside of St. Louis, where she is probably visiting her uncle and aunt, John and Sarah Berry Mckinney and their daughter Bell. The mention of “yellow flags” likely refers to a signal used to indicate that a house was under quarantine.

Biographical Note

Caroline “Carrie” Chandler Parkinson (1866-1957) was born in Franklin Idaho to Samuel Rose Parkinson (1831-1919) and Arabella Ann Chandler Parkinson (1824-1894), and married Charles Goaslind in 1898.

Clara Janet Parkinson (1865-1897), was Caroline’s sister, and Charles Goaslind’s first wife.

Charles “Charley” Goaslind (1860-1950) was married to both Clara and Caroline Parkinson separately, and was involved in civic matters as a county assessor and bookkeeper.

Esther “Easter” Chandler Parkinson (1862-1932) was Caroline’s sister.

Luella “Luel” Smart Parkinson (1862-1932) was a daughter of Samuel Rose Parkinson through a separate plural wife. She married Matthias F. Cowley in 1889.

“George” and “Georgie” are likely George Chandler Parkinson (1857-1920) and George Doney Parkinson (1884-1946), Caroline’s brother and nephew respectively. George Chandler Parkinson’s wife, Lucy Maria Doney (1861-1931) is also mentioned in the letters.

“Aunt Lucy” and “Aunt Ellen” seem to have been siblings of Samuel Rose Parkinson who lived in the Midwest.
