The Fair Store records
Scope and Contents
This collection contains several business ledgers from the Fair Store of Montpelier, Idaho, dating from 1922 to 1968, though the bulk of the information is in the years 1927-1944. The content is divided between two boxes chronologically, by ledger type. This collection is beneficial to anyone researching the details of economic and business history of Montpelier, particularly during the Depression era.
The collection is ordered by size for ease of storage: the larger books are in the first box. Within each box the ledgers are organized chronologically.

Historical Note
Samuel Lewis, brother of Simon and Hyman Lewis of the Lewis Bros. company, founded the Fair Store in the late nineteenth century. Located on Washington Street in downtown Montpelier, Idaho, the Fair Store sold textiles, food, hats, animal hides and other hardware and supplies. Samuel owned the store for many years, until he sold it to his daughter, Lillian Lewis, when he moved to Chicago, Illinois.
