Scope and Contents

Two days before the driving of the Gold Spike at Promontory, Utah, one of the last Westbound covered wagon trains met the first train from California. This was Governor Leland Stanford's special train, pulled by the historic engine "Jupiter" en route to the last spike ceremony a few miles east. The picture was taken May 8, 1869, on the north shore of the Great Salt Lake, by Alfred A. Hart of Sacremento, the official photographer of the Central Pacific (now Southern Pacific).
