Scope and Contents

Black and white print of painting by Emanuel Leutze (1816-1868). Original 20 x 30 mural located in the U.S Capitol. Depicts a group of pioneers and their wagon train at the continental divide looking towards the Pacific Ocean. Notice pioneers William Lewis ( seated on horse on the left) and Daniel Boone (on rock hill standing over two women), freed African-American slave in foreground and American Flag in background. Leutze was born in Germany but trained as an artist in the United States and Europe. He is known for his famous 1851 painting, "Washington Crossing the Delaware." Library of Congress Photo.
