Abstract

The Baker and Johnston photograph colleciton consists of 14 cabinet card images mainly of Arapahoe and Shoshone Indians, some in tribal dress, probably taken in their Evanston, Wyoming studio in the 1880s. Included are images of Arapahoe Chief Sharp Nose, Painting Horse, Oiti, Pappagoit and the Shoshone Chief Washakie.

Abstract Cache Valley, Utah is the home of Burmese Muslim, Karen, and Eritrean refugees. Documenting and preserving their stories is an important goal of Utah State University’s Fife Folklore Archives (FFA). Archives of the Montpelier Historical Society include miscellaneous parts of organizational and personal records. Includes a ledger of the Montpelier Athletic Club (1926-1937); a school supply financial ledger (1909-1911); exhibit notes from the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers; Montpelier Pavilion Corporation record (1906); journal and genealogy of Edward Burgoyne (photocopy, ca. 1880s); receipts of T.L. Glenn, attorney (1898-1906); and some examples of early Salt Lake Valley money, etc.

182 portrait photographs; consisting of cartes-de-visite (6.5 cm. x 10.5 cm.) and cabinet cards (16.5 cm. x 11 cm.), plus a few postcards. Most of the immigrants pictured are Danish, Swedish, or Norwegian converts to the LDS Church, while others were taken in Utah, and may be members of the LDS missions to those countries. Some of the portraits are unidentified and are listed by photographer. Several studio portraits in the collection were taken by H. Maartmann (Christiania, Norway).
