John P. Taggart papers
Scope and Contents
The collection is made up of manuscript letters mailed to John P. Taggart from a variety of merchants and individuals, all dealing with the selling and taxing of liquor in the Utah Territory. The dates of these letters range from October 3 1864 to April 3 1873 with the majority being dated within the years 1872 and 1873.
The locations where these letters are mailed from include Alta, St George, Ophir, Brigham City, Beaver City, Provo, Ogden, Deep Creek, Nephi, Parowan, Fillmore City, Toquerville, Ephriam, Santa Clara, Washington, Rockville, and Corrine.
There is also included a Carte de Viste of John P. Taggart taken by C. R. Savage.

Biographical Note
John P. Taggart was the U.S. federal tax assessor in the Utah Territory from 1870 until 1874. He is also known for a feud with Latter-day Saints church leader Brigham Young over the taxing of church property and income.

This collection is arranged chronologically.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
These materials were purchased by Special Collections and Archives in March 2014 from Ken Sanders Rare Books of Salt Lake City, Utah. The letters in the last two folders were later found in the Becker Brewing Co. materials, also purchased from Ken Sanders Rare Books in 2010 and 2011.
